Edwin Hillier composed his first string quartet on the theme of flows and migrations within the framework of a commission by the Royaumont Foundation’s scheme, Academy Voix Nouvelles. Taking Béla Bartók’s Quartet No.4 – which was pioneering in terms of formal and expressive rupture – as a point of departure, he tried to find a musical answer to the notions of the unknown and integration by giving the audience a more active role in the listening process.
