FLOWS & MIGRATIONS – QUATUOR TANA

FLOWS & MIGRATIONS – QUATUOR TANA

Commissioned by the Academy Voix Nouvelles (Royaumont Foundation, France)

Edwin Hillier composed his first string quartet on the theme of Flows and Migrations within the framework of a commission by the Royaumont Foundation’s scheme, Academy Voix Nouvelles. Taking Bartok’s Quartet n°4 – which was pioneering in terms of formal and expressive rupture – as a point of departure, he tried to find a musical answer to the notions of the unknown and integration by giving the audience a more active role in the listening process.

‘’Edwin Hillier is a very young composer who composed a string quartet for the first time. He engages in a complete exploration of the instruments, without any barriers.’’

Antoine Maisonhaute, Quatuor Tana violinist (France Musique, 06/09/2017)
