SPECTRALISMS

SPECTRALISMS

Within the framework of its annual New Music Forum, Oxford University programmed spectral music played by the renowned London Sinfonietta, and composed primarily by French as well as France-based composers (Gérard Grisey, Tristan Murail, Kaija Saariaho). The concert was introduced by Tristan Murail in conversation with Jonathan Cross, professor of Musicology in Oxford University. This public concert also forms the centrepiece of the first-ever UK-based international conference devoted to discussion of spectral music. The concert thus represented an exciting opportunity to introduce French music of the past 25 years to a British audience still unfamiliar with the spectral movement. It builds on the Sinfonietta’s recent wider exploration of “the spectrum of sound”.
